Oh, Pretty Woman: Nicole Trunfio

While some die-hard fans will find it blasphemous for me to say so, I’ve never really been a big fan of Pretty Woman. But even so I can recognise the pop-cultural significance of Julia Roberts in thigh high patent boots and the introduction of Roy Orbison to a new generation. It was an unconventional love story, and it was fun. Aram Bedrossian’s approach to a photoshoot inspired by the film is equally as fun, especially when those famed patent boots and blonde bobbed wig enter the picture. Nicole Trunfio flits between pensive and whimsical in a way that reflects the moods of the film (to my memory, though I confess it’s been a while since I’ve seen it).

Perhaps it’s time for me to give the film another shot?
The shoot is from the second issue of Lovecat magazine which, from what we’ve seen so far, looks well worth picking up. You can view more Pretty Woman featuring Nicole Trunfio at the thumbnails above.

Swinging schoolgirl chic

Have you been picking up those vintage pieces that are ripe for the 60s revival? This girl has. Very successfully so. And although it’s an original 60s piece her drop-waisted tunic dovetails neatly into the 20s inspirations that are also resurging in 2011.
With navy tights it could all get a little too schoolgirl – but a pair of high-heeled shiny green oxfords fixes that.

It’s also an example of where vintage and high street can co-exist in perfect harmony. While the outfit is all vintage, the shoes are from Office.
Roz Jana was photographed by Altamira in London. Be sure to head over to his site to see some detail shots from the outfit.

A sex kitten Anja Konstantinova

If you were to take the term ‘sex kitten’, make it literal, and apply it with a modern twist, you might end up with this: Anja Konstantinova in Tangent Magazine.
This is the kind of shoot where every component, every element, comes together to create a smashing finished product. The colouring is sultry, the lighting moody. The styling by Heather Cairns is less about inspiring practical wardrobe choices (though there’s a definite inkling of ’70s fashion) and more about evoking a feeling of sensual glamour. And you can’t help but think there’s a purposeful choice to the crumbling backdrops of paint-stripped walls and curious antiquated objects: against a broken piano or wunderkammer of taxidermic animals Anja’s feline beauty seems even more alive.

While pocket-sized in comparison to most models (she stands at about 5’4″) this is the kind of work Anja excels at. And photographer Emmanuel Giraud plays to all her strengths in this shoot.

The sensual side of Sasha

Is a reinvention is on the cards for Sasha Pivovarova?
It was about six years ago now that Sasha stepped onto the scene and into the shadow left by Gemma Ward. Or maybe it’s better put that at the time wide-eyed, unconventional beauty was trending a path paved largely by Gemma, and there, all of a sudden, was Sasha.
Let’s not forget that models have trend cycles, too.
And for models, as trends move, reinvention is required. A model can define an era with her hairstyle or with her figure shape or some other quality, just as an era defines them. Kate Moss went from natural beauty to pixie-cropped gamine to blonde sex bomb (along with innumerous other reinventions in-between) throughout her career. The phoenix survives the longest in the fashion world.

But reinvention is a wildcard best kept for when it’s needed; when its impact will be most felt. And that was largely Daniel’s point in discussing Karlie Kloss’ implied-nude shoot: stunning as it was, it’s simply not a necessary reinvention for her at this stage of her career. In the world of business, you’d call it an unnecessary brand extension.
For Sasha, bursting into the pages of Vogue Paris with a bolder peroxide blonde hairstyle and a new level of sexual confidence seems like one of those phoenix moments. And what a wow moment it is. Some would hardly believe this took place in Vogue Paris’ Emmanuelle Alt era (with Alt herself styling) as opposed to in the foregone days of Carine Roitfeld. The photography by Mert & Marcus is sultry in both the hued and the monochrome shots.
As for whether this is an isolated glimpse at the sensual side of Sasha or a permanent reinvention well, time will tell. Regardless, it’s a pictorial well worth viewing.
